Maybe ZCR should have a fall expo, or something. It might bring some traffic to the site. I know Pure does fall/ spring expos, so maybe a winter/ summer expo might be better here. That way, there would almost always be some sort of expo going on at any time of the year throughout the ZC world.

Like any other ZC expo, people could show demos, screens, and maybe scripts.

I'm kind of surprised one hasn't been suggested yet (or maybe I missed it).

For those of you from back then, remember PZC had a thread about Twilight Princess leading up to its release? Well, here we are, six years later, with another console Zelda on the horizon. I remember when TP came out, and I was like "Man, I'll be like 20 when the next game comes out", which seemed far off to me, then 15.

Anyway, with the official announcement of the game, I'm surprised a thread like this does not already exist. After reading around on the Zelda Wiki, (avoiding Spoilers, which I have a feeling will be harder and harder with each month) I found some things that I thought were interesting.

First and foremost, this:

Quote:He also mentioned that the new Zelda isn't as big as Twilight Princess (as far as physical places go), but rather more dense and in-depth.

This sounds good to me, since TP was pretty huge, but even though it was fun to run through Hyrule field those first few dozen times it got a bit boring after a while. I can imagine it being somewhat like AlttP in the sense that the map may seem kind of small, but there is a lot of stuff to
see anyway.

Maybe this'll get the ball rolling. Either way, it definitely looks good.

Its been a long time coming, I know, but here is the Zquest build that SHOULD have accompanied the LI Build for Lost Isle and Origin releases. It is a stable 2.11, beta 256. So as such, it has most features such as an enemy editor, subscreen editor, ffc combos, and some scripting capability. It plays all older quests just fine on it and no real continue bugs I've noticed when playing mine or any other quests on it. So enjoy.

Note: To get it to work, try putting another 2.11 zquest.txt and zquest.dat file in the folder with the .exe and you should be just fine in getting it to work. Enjoy everyone!

Ruby Quest was a "Choose your own Adventure" game created through a series of 4chan topics (don't worry, it's not anything bad). For those of you who don't know, Choose your own Adventure "games" (CYOA) are when one person will create a scenario in a topic, then other people will tell the creator a list of actions to be followed in that scenario. It's essentially an interactive story which is created on the spot (or a simplified version of D&D).

Ruby Quest has an amazing story, and it can be a bit creepy and gory to boot. So, it's not for anyone who dislikes that stuff.

Well folks, E3 is on its last day, and we've seen a lot of stuff this week, varying from Microsoft's Kinect to Sony's Move to Nintendo's 3DS. There's been a slew of games announced and presented at the conference that would make most gamers drool.

The 3DS, which was actually announced by Nintendo shortly before E3, sports a widescreen top screen which can actually show games in 3D. The system also has a little analog nub, similar to the PSP's (though I hear it is more comfortable than the PSP's). Unfortunately not many games were actually playable, but the list of games announced are a MGS game, OoT, Starfox 64, Mario Kart, Kingdom Hearts, Kid Icarus, Paper Mario, and many more. (View a list of all games currently announced for it here.

Next, let's talk about the Wii. Nothing really new was presented, but a lot of cool stuff was shown. The new Zelda game looks interesting. I'm still unsure about the graphics of it. I hear they look nice, but the screenshots look a bit weird (if you ask me), so it may be something better in person and in motion. The new controls work really well, though. The 2D-3D hybrid Metroid game looks pretty impressive, too. There's a new 2D Kirby game coming out, Kirby's Epic Yarn. The art style is nice, but I'm still unsure of how it'll be. Finally, Retro Studios, maker of the Metroid Prime series, is coming up with a new Donkey Kong game, so that should be really impressive.

I personally haven't watched much of the Microsoft and Sony releases. I did look at Kinect and Move, but neither seems impressive if you ask me now that the Wii has been out for so long.

Any other opinions on the stuff announced at E3?

So, here is what I'd like to do.

Now, I had toyed with this idea before, but basically, I want to remake AlttP "how it would have been on the NES". Now, at first, I was just going to redraw it in Classic, and obviously, some things would be different (like, no magic mirror, for example. Haven't figured out a work around for that yet).

Well, after drawing a decent portion of the overworld with classic, I realized how open, and barren it looked due to classic's limited amount of tiles, and AlttP's open scrolling maps. I said "fuck it", and moved on. So, here I am again, and I have decided to take the AlttP tileset, and edit/ recolor, and ultimately "simplify" it to how it possibly would have looked on the NES. The funny thing is, the GB set is essentially Nintendo's stab at doing just this.

The concept of this quest is, "What if the SNES did not exist, and Nintendo was forced to make the third game on the NES?" As we can see in some later games, the NES was capable of more than most early games made it out to. With ZC still being a heavily modified clone of an NES engine, I think such a project is quiet appropriate.

The reality is, it probably would have been totally different. Graphically, we can imagine maybe it would have taken a JSMB approach, and used only slightly modified graphics. We could also assume with it beginning in 1990, or maybe even 1989, it might have looked better. Well, AlttP did have it's first steps of development on the NES, so wouldn't it be interesting to maybe see what it would have been like had it stayed there?

I just want to get some feedback here on if people would actually like such a quest. Artistically, it would look pretty NESish. I have even used a program to convert all the BGM MIDIs to NES sounding tunes. Granted, this is not truly authentic, since most of them use more than four channels, but it get's the job done. These will be included with the quest as tracker music.

As far as mapping goes, I have found a map of the overworld online, and divided it up into 256 squares to give me a frame of reference for redrawing each of the 256 screens. Now, this is one thing I did not do in the original Classic version. I just kinda... eyeballed it. Now, once I convert the WAV files to something more upload/ download friendly, I will share some of the pseudo-NES tunes with you guys, since, I'd like feedback on that as well. the only one I actually edited in MIDI form was the darkworld theme. Given that you hear this the most, I figured it should not be as hard on the ears as some other NES tunes.

Dungeons will be redesigned as needed to accommodate some NES/ ZC limitations, but don't worry, I'm not going to rape AlttP. It is my favorite Zelda after all, and really, this is kinda of something I've wanted to do in some form or another for years now.

Some alpha/ test screens may be available within the week. Remember: I am not going to a pixel-by-pixel remake with NES graphics. I am going for what it'd be like if Zelda 3 was an actual NES game. Keep that in mind.

In the end, it might resemble this:

EDIT: Okay... After doing some research on those screens, I found out that they are from one of those Chinese pirated Famicom games. Those are infamous as being terrible. Note, I only used those screens as a visual reference of how my quest might look. Regardless of the playable quality of the games, I do like the way it looks. It shows that artistically, it could have been done. My quest will not suffer actual hardware, and space limits of the Famicom pirated carts. So, you will be getting a darkworld, and all the dungeons.

So, thoughts?

Let me use a Metroid reference to try to explain this. Here are my items:
-Missile Tank (5)
-Missile Tank (10)
Trailer

If you follow the indie gaming scene at all, you may recognize the author of this game, Daniel Remas, best known for Iji. This is definitely a simpler game than Iji, but it holds a lot of charm. It's also definitely an old-school type of game. The first thing you'll notice is the very minimalistic graphical style - the game uses only two shades (black and white). Even so, the pixel artwork is still impressive. The gameplay is inspired by Metroid, H.E.R.O., and Section Z. It's exploration/space shooting/bullet dodging goodness. The game is non-linear - if you wanted (and if you're good enough), you can proceed directly to the core of the asteroid and challenge the final boss. You probably won't succeed in such a weak states, so it's better to challenge the weaker bosses and level your defense and gear before trying to finish the game. There are also multiple difficulty levels, but the kicker is that each difficulty level is an entirely new game map. You'll have to explore completely new areas, with more enemies that have new, more challenging patterns.

Overall strongly recommended.

I'm trying to keep this project going on PureZC as well, but since ZCRealm is really for 2.5, I figured it would be good to post here for feed back.

So, in many official titles, we hear about this War in Hyrule. It seems to me that the war took place chronologically between Zelda 2 and OoT. LttP might be after the war, TP is a short time after OoT, WW is way after all the others. So we end up like this:
Zelda 1 -> Zelda 2 -> War -> LttP -> OoT -> MM -> TP -> WW
If anyone can verify this, please do.

So we often hear about this war, but so far Nintendo has told us next to nothing about it. So I took it upon myself to tell this story.

Story:

So after Zelda 2, Link and Zelda get it on and have lots of kids. These kids spread all over Hyrule, some even going to lands beyond Hyrule like Termina or Gerudia. These descendants form tribes. Every time the Hylian Royal Family becomes endangered, the Hylian Royal Knight blood flowing in the veins of these descendants spurs them to take up their sword, shield, and green tunic, and save the day. But as the tribes move further from Hyrule and as the Knight Blood in them grows thin, they can hear the call less and less.

Now, you are Link the 6th of the Chain Tribe. One night, you have a dream of a princess begging you to save Hyrule from the flames of war that will come from the west. She asks you to come to Hyrule Castle so she can tell you more, then you wake up.

The village elder, Link the 4th, tells you that it was your Knight Blood that allowed Princess Zelda to call you and that you should answer her. You take up the White Sword, kept in the family for generations, and off to Hyrule castle you go.

Once you get off your mountain and out of the Lost Woods, you see soldiers coming through the Deku Forest. One of them tells you that the King of Hyrule has been killed by an assassin from Termina, and that war has broken out between the two worlds.

After sneaking into Hyrule Castle and meeting the Princess, she tells you that Termina is not responsible, but in fact that Gerudia is to blame. So off you go to Gerudia.

Without spoiling too much more story, suffice to say soon the whole known world is fighting.

Graphics:

I'm using DoR tiles plus some of my own tiles for new items or other things not included in DoR.

Music:

Music will be comprised of any and all Zelda Midis I can find. Expect to hear many a familiar song.

Items:

To me, the more items in a Zelda Game, the better. So naturally I crammed so many items into my game, they barely fit on the subscreen. Only a couple are original, but many will be used in ways new to Zelda. And expect to use them a lot! Not twice in a quest and then that's it. Also, be ready to do a great many optional dungeon for hidden upgrades, or even new items.

Dungeons:

You will see many dungeons from other games in the series, particularly OoT, MM, and Zelda 1. Also, several dungeons will be all new.

Other:

I've made up explanations for a lot of stuff in this game. So talk to everyone and explore often to learn the story of many people you didn't know about. Also, besides the three main continents, you might find ways into places you'd never dreamed of going to, such as the Sacred Realm....

Staff:

Mostly me, Clayton Slaughter, but I owe a great deal of thanks to some friends that contribute, as well as the people who's ideas I've used, scripts I've used, tiles I've used, or who have given me advise or troubleshooting of ZQuest. I'll have a full list in the credits, and maybe I'll have the ongoing list on this page sooner or later...

Progress:

I work very slowly, and often need the help of scripters which I sometimes do and sometimes don't get. I'll keep a list on here and try to keep it updated.

Mapping: 1%
I'm not too bad at this but I often get frustrated and I work slowly. Also, I have a lot of maps to make!

Tiles: 60%
There's a handful of tiles I need for environments that I'm trying to hand draw. I suck, so if you want to help, please do.

Items: 87%
Only some scripted items remain, I think I've gotten the rest to work. Mostly.

Enemies: 50%
I haven't really started, but I plan on just editing the basics and only adding a few.

Bosses: 0%
Yeah... Gonna need some scripts for the bosses I have in mind. If I can't get those, my bosses aren't gonna be much fun... Haven't even started yet. But they are planned already!

Subscreen: 99%
Nearly done, just gotta find any kinks or mistakes I made.

Cutscenes: 1%
These go along with mapping in the first place, but I also wanted to do some scripted scenes. So yeah...

Scripts (Total): 33%
I have some finished and compiled, but the cutscenes, bosses, and a few items still remain. Plus I'm terrible at code, so when I few didn't work, I have to ask for help. (By the way, if you're one of those people who say, "You shouldn't plan on having scripts in your game if you can't write them yourself," yeah, I've heard that before. I choose to do things this way, and some people do offer enough help for me to get by.

Screen Shots:

I'll try to get a few.... Sometime....

So! If Hylian Wars interests you at all, please give me feed back! If you'd like to help, I would be very happy to have you! Any questions?

Save State Question

I have a question about emulation.

I open up a Zelda ROM and made three files, named State1, State2, State3, and then saved them to save states 1-3. If I went to State4, and deleted file one and renamed it State4, would I have problems if I went back and loaded State1?

Do they work by each save state making a copy of the game that I could have three separate files in? Or does it just take a photograph of the game and let you re-load it from there?

Here's something to make this clearer:

Does it go:

-State1 - (File 1, file 2, file 3)
-State2 - (File 1, file 2, file 3)
...

Or:

-State1 - Photograph of File 2
-State2 - Photograph of File 2
-State3 - Photograph of File 1
...

I understand that this is a very n00bish question, but I was just wondering how save states operates.

Atma posted this over at AGN. It's actually a really good flash game. Very authentic feeling. As the title implies, it is a clone of the original SMB, but you can also play with Link, Samus, Simon Belmont, the Contra dude, and Mega Man, all with their own original controls, and power ups.

It's pretty sweet. Megaman is probably my favorite so far behind Mario obviously.

EDIT: Derp. forgot the link. >.>'
